1) Chlorophyll - “Charge the Blood and Oxygenate the Cells”–
In choosing the summer picks I really wanted to highlight the energetics of the sunny season we’re in. The outside environment looks green and lush. Plants are sprouting up all around on the roadside and in our backyard gardens. What could be more appropriate than chlorophyll – the LIFE BLOOD of the plant.
Chlorophyll is basically one molecule away from our own blood. Where our blood’s central molecule is hemoglobin, chlorophyll’s is magnesium. When we ingest chlorophyll, it’s essentially like we’re giving ourselves a healthy blood transfusion.
Chlorophyll is a rich detoxifying agent, as well. It helps bind up chemicals and heavy metals and removes them from the body. Its cleansing abilities help to clear the intestines and neutralize body odors. Many cancer protocols incorporate wheat grass juice, spirulina or chlorella, which are tremendously high in chlorophyll.
I feel so good incorporating chlorophyll into my supplement regimen, especially in the summer months. It makes my body feel alive and gives me tons of energy without having to rely on caffeine. I chose World Organic Liquid Chlorophyll because it’s a clean source, simple to add into one’s daily protocol, and great tasting.

2) Aloe Inner Filet “Summer Nourishment for Optimum Digestion”–
For centuries, aloe has been known for its natural digestive properties that support a healthy gut microbiome. Aloe is replete in enzymes that help break down food and improve nutrient absorption. It also contains prebiotic properties that help to promote the growth of beneficial bacteria in the gut microbiome. Aloe has anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties that work together to soothe inflammation and reduce irritation in the digestive tract. This helps alleviate symptoms such as bloating, gas, and constipation.
Aloe has immune-boosting properties such as polysaccharides, antioxidants, and vitamins that work together to support the body's immune system and protect against infections. It contains the compounds bradykinase and acemannan, which have an optimizing and balancing effect on the entire body.
I use aloe quite a bit in my practice with digestive issues, liver/gallbladder support, and skin ailments. I especially love it in the summer months when aloe grows and flourishes in our area.
I chose Lily of the Desert Aloe Vera Juice Inner Fillet because it has the highest concentration of bioactive compounds. The juice is easy to take by itself or mixed into water or juice.

3) Sprouted Seeds “Activated Nutrition”–
I love sprouts! Especially in the summer months as a stand-alone snack or topping my salads. They are so easy to make and loaded with nutrition.
Essentially, sprouts are seeds that have germinated and become very young plants. After hours of soaking the seeds, the germination process will begin. I make broccoli sprouts at home and it usually takes a few days of soaking and rinsing to be ready to consume. The end product is a sprout measuring 1/8–2 inches long.
Sprouts are a natural source of enzymes crucial in supporting digestion and facilitating the breakdown of complex carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. Sprouts boost antioxidant activity 10-fold. In a study, various sprouts showcased significant free radical-scavenging capabilities, protecting against oxidative stress and potential harm caused by these unstable molecules. Sprouts have higher bioavailability of nutrients compared to mature plants. They have been shown to aid in weight loss, improve digestion, lower blood sugar levels, increase fiber, protein, and antioxidant levels, and help with cardiovascular issues.
I chose Living Intentions Activated Sprouted Pumpkin Seeds. I love pumpkin seeds due to their high levels of antioxidants, iron, zinc, and magnesium. They are amazing at supporting the endocrine system and cardiovascular health – the additional sprouting makes them a no brainer snack for summer!

4) Sauerkraut “Fermented Food for Microbiome Health” –
Sauerkraut has long been an ancient staple and a current modern-day “superfood”. From gut health and immunity to heart health, bone health and detoxification, to mood, mental health – to say the research on sauerkraut health benefits is “promising” would be an understatement!
I stumbled onto making my own sauerkraut after my son developed eczema shortly after introducing solid foods around 6 months of age. By giving him merely the fermented liquid, I was able to heal his microbiome and reverse the eczema.
Sauerkraut is rich in prebiotic life to help “feed” the healthy bacteria in our gut. It is an abundant food source of probiotics, as well, such as l. plantarum, and lactobacillus brevis, which promote healthy digestion. Since the gut is so integral in health, sauerkraut can help optimize the immune system, and protect the body against infections and diseases.
Sauerkraut is antioxidant-rich and anti-inflammatory. Antioxidants play a crucial role in protecting our cells from harmful free radicals, which contribute to chronic diseases and aging. It contains various antioxidants, including vitamin C, sulforaphane, and dozens of other “volatile compounds” which help reduce oxidative stress and prevent cell damage caused by inflammation.
I chose Wildbrine Raw Organic Sauerkraut. The raw is a must for me because pasteurization kills off the essential bacteria that is so important to consume. I also love that Wildbrine has so many flavors including kimchi, beet & cabbage, and dill & garlic.
I have added in a simple lacto-fermented sauerkraut recipe if you are brave and bold enough to want to make your own. It’s not that hard and quite fun. My kids think the sauerkraut tastes better the longer it ages!
Lacto-Fermented Sauerkraut
Ingredients:
• Head of Cabbage
• Sea Salt
• Whey from strained Yogurt
• Filtered Water (Spring or Reverse Osmosis)
• Mason Jars
Directions:
Rough chop head of cabbage into small pieces. Fill each large Mason jar with cabbage up to the top, leaving an inch for fermentation process. Add to each Mason jar: 2 TBS. of whey and 1 TBS sea salt. Fill each jar (leaving an inch at the top) with filtered water. Place lid on Mason jar and put in the cupboard to ferment for 3 days. (1 head of cabbage should make about 3-4 24oz. Mason jars of sauerkraut.) After 3 days, transfer to the fridge to keep for months to come. The sauerkraut will mellow and taste better as it ages. Enjoy!

5) Moringa “Most Nutrient Dense Superfood” –
If you work with me as a Naturopathic Doctor or have attended one of the many classes I have taught at the Better Health Stores over the years, you will know how concerned I am about the intense levels of electromagnetic radiation we are encountering daily on this planet. In every season of Dr. Corey’s Picks, I have highlighted certain nutrients and minerals that help protect our DNA and fight against the radiation poisoning we are all undergoing daily (boron/iodine/selenium/etc.). I am so excited to introduce you to Moringa and its amazing ability to help protect against this and so much more!
Moringa, known as the 'Miracle Tree', has over 90 different plant-based vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and amino acids. It is one of the most nutrient-dense plants in the world. Moringa is full of B vitamins and amino acids and can give one a natural energy boost without jitters, while also supporting neurotransmitter function to promote alertness, productivity, and overall well-being.
Moringa can help with restful sleep because it contains tryptophan, a precursor to serotonin. Serotonin is then converted to melatonin, which helps regulate the sleep-wake cycle. Moringa is also abundant in magnesium, which helps promote relaxation and may improve sleep quality. Its anti-inflammatory properties can mitigate pain and discomfort that can disturb sleep.
I chose Organic India Moringa Leaf Powder. I love that it can easily be added into smoothies or blended into my morning Matcha Green Tea.

6) Total Lymph Cleanse “Weight Loss and Pain Reduction” –
Summertime is such an amazing season to support the lymphatic system. Most people don’t even realize that we have about 3-4 times more lymph fluid in the body than we do blood. Given this fact, why aren’t doctors focusing on this vital system more?
If the Lymphatic system is congested, we can deal with things like:
• Water Retention
• Puffiness in the Face
• Fatigue
• Weight Problems
• Skin Issues/Rashes/Itchy Skin/Breakouts
• Allergies
• Body Stiffness and Achiness
• Emotions of Irritation with Everything/Annoyance with Little Things
I love this Solaray Total Lymph Cleanse. It has some of the greatest lymphatic herbs including red root, cleavers, and burdock. Red root helps to improve circulation and drainage within the lymphatic vessels. Cleavers enhance the function of the lymphatic system and improve the ability to flush out toxins, decrease congestion and reduce swelling. Burdock contains phytochemicals such as flavonoids, lignans and polyacetylenes which are known to help detoxification through increased circulation.
We can also support the lymph during the summer months by drinking plenty of lemon water. I love dry skin brushing before a bath or shower to stimulate the skin and increase drainage. Get a lymph drainage massage. I have seen small miracles occur with this amazing bodywork technique.

7) Irish Sea Moss “Immune/Blood Sugar/Thyroid Support”–
I love Irish Sea Moss. I’ve literally been using it for years and years. The first time I tried it almost 20 years ago was as a healthy alternative to thickening agents like carrageenan and guar gum. I would just sprinkle a teaspoon or 2 into soups or smoothies to thicken and add a boat load of nutrients.
It seems like it’s a hot item as of recent. I was at Better Health Novi for the fair in mid-May and many people came up to me in the aisles asking me about it. Irish sea moss is common all around the shores of Ireland and can also be found along the coast of Europe, and the Atlantic coasts of Canada. Because it is a sea vegetable, it is naturally high in iodine. Iodine is the chief mineral that feeds the thyroid, making Irish sea moss an amazing endocrine supporter.
It is an amazing immune modulator rich in vital minerals such as calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, zinc and copper. Irish sea moss, along with other seaweeds, can be excellent sources of beneficial live bacteria making them a powerhouse to support the overall microbiome and gut health. It is rich in a compound called fucoxanthin, which has been shown to help support weight loss, lower blood sugar levels and reduce overall cholesterol.
I chose the FOOD MOVEMENT Organic Irish Sea Moss powder because it’s easy to add into your summer morning smoothie. They also make capsules if one prefers to take it in that form.

8) Castor Oil “Ultimate Skin Nutrient”
Many of you are not new to castor oil and have used it in the past. Castor Oil was mentioned in the Bible and has been found in ancient Egyptian tombs dating back to 4,000 B.C. Evidence of its cultivation was discovered circa 500 B.C. in central Egypt where it was used in cosmetics, medicines and as a lamp oil. Many believe that Cleopatra used castor oil to brighten the whites of her eyes. It has been widely used for digestive ailments, acting as a laxative, and castor oil packs used with flannel. The famous Edgar Cayce talked about the power of castor oil extensively in his readings. Recently, castor oil has made quite a resurgence, trending on social media and in natural health circles.
Castor oil has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antifungal, and pain-relieving properties. It can help with all kinds of skin conditions, infections, digestive issues, immune strength, and lymph stagnation.
I must admit, because of its recent publicity, I have begun using it again in my daily routine. It has made such a noticeable difference in my skin health, and lymphatic system. At night I apply it liberally to my face and have noticed that spots are fading, and my morning skin is bright, healthy looking with even skin tone. I am also putting a couple of drops in my eyes at night and, just like the Cleopatra story, the whites of my eyes look clearer, and my eyes are less puffy when I wake up. I believe this is due to its amazing lymphatic properties. Lastly, I massage it into my armpits at night. I have little to no need for natural deodorant now because it is decongesting and detoxifying the axillary lymph nodes.
I chose the Heritage Store Organic Castor Oil. It is a clean source and hexane free.
